The Power of Visuals as a Nudge: How Films and Images Shape Children’s Environmental Awareness
In mid-March, the cinema hall of “Kozara” (City of Prijedor, Bosnia and Herzegovina) turned into a real eco-classroom. More than 40 children, including 18 participants of the pilot program “Citizens of a New Generation – Eco Heroes” and their friends, explored environmental protection and sustainable living through the power of visuals.
Together with their parents and friends, the children took part in a film workshop that combined fun, education, and a nudge approach—subtle interventions that encourage individuals and communities to make sustainable choices without limiting their freedom. The animated film followed a hero living on a planet covered in waste, searching for a way to restore nature. Through strong visuals and emotional scenes, the story delivered key environmental messages and inspired children to think about the world they want to leave for future generations.
Visual Nudges in Action
The film was just one part of the strategy. The workshop featured visual nudge elements designed to inspire reflection and action. Posters with powerful eco-messages were placed around the space, while popcorn boxes carried eco-hero symbols and reminders about recycling. While enjoying the film, children effortlessly absorbed these messages.
Learning Through Interaction
After the screening, young environmentalists joined an interactive discussion, analyzing the film’s key messages. With educators’ guidance, they learned to recognize environmental issues around them and think about solutions.
The workshop didn’t end there. Each participant received an Eco Challenge Map to fill with stickers on their journey to becoming an Eco Hero. The first sticker, Eco Detective, marked their new ability to observe waste, water misuse, and excessive plastic use more carefully.
This was just the beginning! As they complete future workshops and tasks, children will earn more stickers, gaining the skills to become true Eco Heroes:
- Planet Protector – learning simple ways to safeguard nature.
- Recycling Wizard – discovering how waste can get a second life.
- Eco Gardener – understanding the importance of plants for a healthy ecosystem.
- Eco Influencer – inspiring others and spreading environmental awareness.
The Lasting Impact of Visuals
This workshop once again showed how powerful visuals are in shaping children’s awareness. Through images, symbols, colours, and emotions, they absorbed values that will stay with them for life. When eco-messages are paired with strong visual impressions, they are more likely to stick and influence future behavior.
Most importantly, children learned through play and fun that small daily changes can make a big difference for the planet. When little hands come together, the world can become a greener and better place for all!
This pilot action was organised and hosted by PREDA – Development agency of the city of Prijedor, as one out of six NUDGES pilot actions. Stay tuned for PREDA’s pilot next phases!
