Biodiversity loss and climate change are intrinsically linked. Nature-based solutions, such as natural elements and processes in plants and soils, play a crucial role in mitigating climate change. In cities, this is reflected in new efforts to preserve nature and manage green spaces effectively. Concepts like green and green-blue infrastructure, alongside sustainable landscaping practices, are gaining traction.
This was the key theme at The Power of Nature in Cities international conference, organized on 12 November 2024 by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Spatial Planning, the Institute for Spatial Policies, and the Association of Municipalities of Slovenia, at the Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Ljubljana. The event brought together experts and innovators to share global examples of successful green urban solutions and brainstorm ideas tailored for Slovenian cities and municipalities.
Of course, we had to be there! The NUDGES Project Partner from Slovenia, E-zavod, joined this lively discussion to expand the Euro-MED community of interest in our NUDGES project. The content of the conference acknowledged the feasibility of the planned pilot in Slovenia called “A Smell of Change“, where citizens will, among other aromatic activities, learn how to make natural fragrances from local aromatic herbs.
But here’s the twist: the organizers went a step further in nudging participants by creating an atmosphere that smelled like nature itself! A fragrant reminder that the future of cities is not just about green spaces, but about engaging the senses and embracing the power of nature in every aspect of urban life.
